If you are going on a ski vacation, you may be wondering what you need to pack. Or maybe you know exactly what to pack but have no idea how to get it all from your home to your vacation destination. It's not like you can throw your skis in a suitcase and hop on a plane. Right?
The first step is to find out what equipment you can get at your destination. Does your resort have a rental shop? If not, is there one nearby? Once you find a rental location, check out the fees for renting everything you might need: skis, boots and poles. If the rental price works with your budget, this is probably a good option as long as using rental equipment isn't a problem for you and it certainly eases the problem of packing.
If rental equipment is not the thing for you, you may think about buying new equipment when you get there and selling it before you leave. First see if there are any local ski shops near your destination. Since you are going to a ski resort, you'll probably find a shop or two. Next get prices on all the equipment you will need (skis, poles, boots) and ask if the shop buys back used equipment. If they don't, see if they know anyplace that does. Once you find a place that will purchase the used gear, get an estimate on what you could get for your slightly used stuff at the end of your vacation. Now calculate the difference between the price of the new gear and the amount you can sell it for. If you think the cost is worth it, this could be your answer.
Skis aren't the only troublesome item when it comes to packing for your ski vacation. You also have to deal with bulky things like ski suits, ski jackets and sweaters, that could easily take up an entire suitcase or two. There is no way you could squeeze all of these bulky items plus your clothes and other necessities in one suitcase.
Luckily, there is a solution to this problem. All you have to do is pack your bulky items in a box and ship them to yourself, in care of the lodge or resort you are staying at. First contact your lodge or resort, let them know that you will be sending yourself a package, and ask if they will hold it for you. They usually will. Then get your box, pack it up and send it off. Depending on the final weight of your box and how you are shipping it, you shouldn't pay more than $50, and that's less than it costs to take an extra bag on the plane.
