Commuting by Bicycle

If you think that riding to bike to work is not a good way to lose weight or does not count as part of your total bike training miles, then think again. This is a great way to get into shape and has a ton of benefits including saving you money on gas, parking and on maintenance's on your car. A recent study shows that if you bike just 1 day a week for the year it would save you around One Thousand dollars as well as the environmental benefits. All These things are great reasons why you should commute by bicycle and it is plenty easy to do with a little planning.

First off you need to get used to the different riding you will doing. Often times in traffic while commuting it is not only slower but a waste of energy to try and sprint off from every stop. Master the art of urban riding. Figure out how to ride safely and quickly in traffic. Depending on where ayou are, it can be quicker to just take up your own lane or it can be better to just share a lane.

You will probably also not want to use a backpack or something like that. You will want to get a rear rack on your bike and one that is strong enough to hold as much gear as you need. You will probably not want one that just clips to your seatpost as these have quite a high failure rate when used with a lot of cargo.

Next, figure out what you are going to do about hygiene. Many people use the excuse of "oh there is no shower at work so I can't bike" The fact is that most people who end up commuting by bicycle just bring a full change of clothes. By wiping down with a towel and changing clothes you will remove 99% of sweat on you. If you are serious about worrying about your smell or hygiene, look into seeing if there are any local ymcas or other gyms available that you can shower at for a monthly fee.
