When packing gear for your triathlon race it's best to break items down into 4 categories and focus on one category at a time. Here's a sample 4 category break down: PERSONAL, SWIM, BIKE, RUN.
The PERSONAL category includes:
* ID (both photo and USAT membership card if you have one)
* Tri kit (tri suit, tri shorts/shirt combo, etc.)
* Nutrition (drinks, gels, bars, electrolytes, etc.)
* Sunscreen, chap stick, and body lubricant, like Body Glide
* Towels x 2 (1 to use after and 1 to layout in transition)
* Dry Clothes and shoes to put on after race
* Sunglasses (race and/or casual)
* Braces/Wraps (personal knee, leg, ankle braces you may use)
* Any race info, registrations, directions, maps, etc.
It's a good idea to work the next 3 categories over in your mind from "head to toe" and then move onto the specific equipment you will be using in that particular category.
The SWIM category includes:
* Race issued swim cap
* Goggles (anti-fog product if you use it)
* Wetsuit or swim skins if allowed/needed
* Timing Chip strap/Chip (you may pick up chip morning of race)
The BIKE category includes:
* Helmet with helmet number
* Bike with bike number
* Bike gloves if you wear them
* Socks if you wear them
* Bike shoes
* Water bottles
* Well stocked bike kit (tubes, CO2, tool, etc.)
The RUN category includes:
* Running hat or visor
* Race number with race belt
* Running shoes
If you have a triathlon transition bag then you will eventually become accustomed to pre-race packing and what items go where and you will know immediately if you are missing any important gear. Having a list like this will greatly reduce the stress of making sure you have everything for your next race.
