Oxygen Supply
Oxygen levels precipitously drop as the diver descends further underwater. In cold water locations (such as freshwater) where below-thermocline layers hardly circulate to the surface, oxygen levels become even more scarce as deep sea organisms compete for a limited oxygen supply. This is where the functionality of the cylinder tank comes in handy.
The compressed air inside the tank, composed of a mix of atmospheric gases, supplies breathable air to the diver that is fed through the mouthpiece of a diving regulator set. The first stage regulator controls the pressure level of gas flowing from the tank by reducing it to around 150 psi, a level fit for human breathing. One of the high-pressure hoses attached to the regulator connects to a buoyancy compensator, a diving gear that regulates neutral buoyancy and counteracts underwater pressure.
Buoyancy and Pressure
Ambient pressure generally increases as the diver descends the depths of the sea and will most likely encounter pressure in different pressure points, particularly from below the torso, that induces an upward buoyancy force. To contradict the restrictive effect of ambient pressure on the diver's mobility, the buoyancy compensator or BC, with its inflatable bladders, vent and inflation valves, and weight system, aggressively alters the weight of the diver and his scuba gear to sustain neutral buoyancy and keep the diver afloat at a particular depth, without sinking or ascending accordingly.
Temperature
Warm water is typically more dense than cold water and this is the reason why sea temperature drops as the diver plunges into deeper water. Whether diving in warm or cold water locations, the body requires a tantamount of protection from the different forces of nature and this is where the wetsuit finds its ultimate purpose. A neoprene wetsuit protects the diver from abrasion and the scorching heat of the sun when swimming close to the surface. Meanwhile in chilly waters, a full suit of at least 3mm torso thickness will provide utmost insulation to keep the diver warm and comfortable.
